When refineries go down, gasoline prices go up.  That's why we started the clock on the next "unplanned" refinery outage: the Golden State Gouge-ometer.  You can enter a contest to guess how long refiners can make it between outages this year.

Perspective Needed At California Energy Commission

California has a summer blend of gasoline in order for cars to run more efficiently and cleaner in the warmer months. This year, refiners used their market power to raise prices after the switch took place in Los Angeles. The blend is marginally more expensive to make, but not by anywhere near what LA refiners are charging their gas stations for the new blend: 37 cents more.

Aliso Canyon will be front and center at an Assembly Utilities and Commerce hearing today. Sen. Fran Pavley's bill, SB 380, would require state officials to immediately institute a moratorium on injections of natural gas into any wells located within and serving the Aliso Canyon storage facility.

In a fiery hallway exchange last night at Torrance City Hall, Congressman Ted Lieu rightfully exchanged angry words with Exxon executive Roger Conant, the Refinery Process Manager, about Exxon's refusal to respond to all subpoenas, “I am protecting the residents of Torrance."

Heading to Sacramento Wednesday to testify on California’s outrageous gasoline price spikes, I was looking for context to explain the $10 billion extra California drivers paid for their gasoline in 2015 compared to US drivers. Then I read the Star Wars series made $4.4 billion worldwide. 
 
An oil oligopoly, anchored by four California oil refiners, that control 78% of the gasoline market, raked in more extra dollars at the pump in one year than one of the most successful movie franchises in history.
