California's Sleight Of Hand On Aliso Canyon

No sooner had the PUC and oil regulators greenlighted resumed natural gas injections at Aliso Canyon last week, than Los Angeles County sued to block it.

LA County is suing Southern California Gas for failing to conduct required safety and environmental studies on its natural gas storage facillity and to turn over public documents before it is reopened. As well the County should.

CA Attorney General Should Not Depend On PUC To Watchdog Utilities

We're sure that California's new Attorney General Xavier Becerra wouldn't want to endanger California's coastline or its residents. The Google Earth photo on the right shows the resting place for millions of tons of nuclear waste from the flawed and shuttered San Onofre nuclear power station. The honeycombs are ready for waste casks not meant to last more than a few decades.

First Big Test for Attorney General Becerra: Investigating Sempra and SoCalGas

State Attorney General Xavier Becerra has just been confirmed. Now he's got a big test in front of him. Our public interest group, together with Food & Water Watch, just wrote him, urging him to investigate unfair business practices in the manipulation of Los Angeles natural gas supplies by Southern California Gas, its parent Sempra, and pipeline manager Kinder Morgan.

California Committee Looking At High Gas Prices Sets Its Sights on Market Power

The Energy Commission committee charged with finding a solution for California’s high gas prices has sometimes been a hostile place for consumers over the last year and a half. At Tuesday's meeting, that changed. The Air Resources Board, NRDC, four members of the committee, and even oil trader Vitol SA echoed Consumer Watchdog to question refiners' market power and lack of transparency for price spikes.

Will Peevey go to prison?

When agents from the California Attorney General’s office raided Mike Peevey’s home, the question arose about whether the former Public Utilities Commission chief could land in jail for impropriety. His transgressions against ratepayers include seeking utility contributions to his political causes while bartering secretly with utilities over their desired rulings in pending cases.

Oil Prediction: Another Year of Gouging Or a Year of Courage?

For California, 2015 was the year of the price spike. Could 2016 be the year of courage? 
 
A year ago, Consumer Watchdog warned that the oil industry would use 2015 to raise gas prices for huge profits and to push its political agenda. Predictably, the industry obscenely raised prices, making 2015  a record year for California gas prices compared to the national average. In Los Angeles, consumers are still paying over a dollar more than the rest of the nation.
