Exxon misrepresented its safety record at its Torrance refinery to lawmakers at a public hearing at Torrance City Hall last week, suggesting its February 18 explosion and fire was unique, and did not acknowledge how extensively the blast damaged its ability to supply gasoline.

Los Angeles State officials have stripped Blue Shield of California of its tax-exempt status, an exemption the nonprofit health insurer has held since its founding in 1939. The decision could put Blue Shield on the hook for tens of millions of dollars in state taxes each year.

 Saying the public has a right to know, Consumer Watchdog called upon Senators Mike McGuire and Jim Beall to subpoena Department of Health Care Services data on prescribing patterns of psychotropic medication by doctors to foster youth. Senator McGuire and Senator Beall are holding a joint legislative hearing today on the misuse of psychotropic medication in the foster care system.
