A Santa Monica-based nonprofit organization is blasting Google's self-driving cars, calling into question their safety and reliability. Consumer Watchdog released a video this week following the technology company's report that the cars had been involved in a total of 11 accidents since the program began six years ago.

Google should release the reports of accidents involving its driverless cars that have been filed with the California Department of Motor Vehicles and to commit to making public all future driverless car accident reports.

California Is A Long Way From Driverless Cars, Consumer Watchdog Tells Insurance Commissioner

Consumer Watchdog today challenged the idea that widespread use of fully autonomous or driverless cars is imminent, and urged the state Insurance Commissioner to focus on immediate consumer concerns of auto safety and privacy.

The nonpartisan, nonprofit public interest group also rejected insurance industry arguments that California Proposition 103’s consumer protections would not be necessary as vehicles become automated.
